Sir,
This refers to the editorial’Introducing semester system’ (DE, April 25, 2014).It is heartening to read that UGC is planning to introduce much needed education reforms in the higher education and one of the contemplated reforms is the introduction of semester system at graduation level and choice based credit system at the postgraduation level.
The academic council and all those related to higher education system in our state need to examine the pros and cons as also the feasibility of introduction of these reforms in the higher education system to bring it at par with other universities of national and international repute.
It is a fact that the best of our universities donot have enviable international ranking with none of them figuring in the top two hundred universities of the world as per the surveys conducted by independent agencies last year.We have not been able to produce Nobel Laureates in India for a long time despite spending a lot of funds on higher education though Indian born scientists such as S. Chandershekhar, Hargobind Khurana and economist Amartya Sen have made India proud by pursuing higher studies and research work abroad.Surely something is wrong with our education system at school and higher level.
It is high time that apex educational bodies such as CABE and UGC took measures to pinpoint the shortcomings in our education system and took remedial measures to plug the loopholes by reforming our educational system to enable our graduates and postgraduates to attain international standards in terms of knowledge and research.Meanwhile, any reform aimed at streamlining and improving the educational system needs to be implemented in earnest to catch up with the other universities and other institutions of higher learning in India and abroad.
Yours etc….
