Srinagar, Jan 7: The temperatures at most of the places across Kashmir rose by several notches with Srinagar recording minimum temperature above the freezing point for the first time in Chillai Kalan.
The minimum temperature settled at 0.9 degrees Celsius in Srinagar, compared to the previous night’s minus 0.5 degrees.
The city witnessed bright Sunshine, bringing respite from the intense cold conditions with day temperature settling at 8.6 degrees Celsius.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 6.6 degrees Celsius, compared to the previous night’s minus 4.5 degrees. The day temperature of the place settled at 3.4 degrees Celsius, 2.7 notches above normal.
Pahalgam recorded a minimum temperature of minus 7.8 degrees Celsius and was the coldest place in the Valley. The day temperature of the place settled at 6.6 degrees Celsius, 1.9 notches above normal.
Qazigund had a low of 0.4 degrees Celsius and the day temperature of the place settled at 9.0 degrees Celsius, 2.8 notches above normal.
Kupwara recorded a minimum temperature of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius and the place was warmest in Kashmir today at 9.5 degrees Celsius which is 2.8 notches above normal.
Kokernag saw the mercury settle at minus 0.5 degrees and the day temperature settled at 5.6 degrees Celsius which is 0.6 notches above normal.
The Meteorological department (MeT) Srinagar said that the weather conditions would remain generally dry till January 10 while on January 11 and 12, there is a possibility of light rain in plains of Jammu and snow at isolated to scattered places. “From January 13-15, the weather would remain generally dry.”
Kashmir is currently under the grip of ‘Chillai-Kalan’ – the harshest period of winter – that began on December 21. During the 40 days of ‘Chillai-Kalan’, the chances of snowfall are the highest and the temperature drops considerably.
‘Chillai-Kalan’ ends on January 29. It is followed by a 20-day ‘Chillai-Khurd (small cold)’ and a 10-day ‘Chillai-Bacha (baby cold)’.
