Stampede: 2 officials suspended, 3 transferred by Andhra govt

TIRUPATI, Jan 9 : The Andhra Pradesh Government has suspended two officials, including a deputy superintendent of police, and transferred two officials, including the district superintendent of police, holding them responsible for the stampede incident in which six people were killed.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu here on Thursday consoled the bereaved family members and visited those who were undergoing treatments in hospitals. He also visited the place where the stampede took place.

The Chief Minister voiced his anger over the officials for their indifference.

The Chief Minister, later addressing a press conference here, said that DSP Ramana Kumar and Gosala Director Harnath Reddy were suspended for dereliction of duty.

He said that district Superintendent of Police Subba Rayudu, Joint Executive Officer of TTD Gowthami, and CSO Sridhar were transferred. The Chief Minister said that a judicial inquiry would be held on the stampede incident.

The Chief Minister announced Rs 25 lakh ex gratia to kin of each deceased, Rs 5 lakh to seriously injured persons, and Rs 2 lakh to the 33 people who suffered minor injuries. He also assured of giving a job on contract basis to the kin of the deceased.

All the 35 injured people would be allowed to have darshan of Lord Venkateswara on auspicious Ekadasi day on Friday at hill shrine Tirumala.

The Chief Minister said that he felt saddened at the stampede incident in which six people were killed. As a devotee, he wishes that such untoward incidents not occurred at pilgrim centres. He also opposed doing politics at the hill shrine Tirumala.

Earlier, the Chief Minister held a meeting with district collector Venkateswar, SP Subba Rayudu, TTD EO Shyamala Rao, and TTD board chairman BR Naidu and reviewed the situation.
