Pakistan’s sudden interest in strengthening economic ties with Bangladesh is a strategic move, given the current fragile state of Bangladesh’s relations with India.¹ With the ouster of Sheikh Hasina, Pakistan has sensed an opportunity to increase its influence in Bangladesh. Pakistan’s trade ministry is actively identifying areas of trade and investment in Bangladesh, with a proposed meeting of the Pakistan-Bangladesh Joint Economic Commission in December or January. Bangladesh, however, must exercise caution and consider the long-term implications of aligning with Pakistan. India must also act swiftly to reassure Bangladesh of its commitment to their economic partnership.
