This initiative aimed at modernizing wastewater management systems by constructing advanced Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants (FSTPs) across the Union Territory.
As per an official document available with the Excelsior, the project will focus on establishing key infrastructure, including sewerage networks, Intercept & Diversion (I&D) structures, and pipelines for the efficient collection, treatment, and disposal of the wastewater.
These systems will comply with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) standards and incorporate provisions for future upgrades to enable the reuse of treated water for various applications.
As part of the project, the document claimed, a comprehensive study will be conducted to first assess the existing state of sewerage systems, STPs, and FSTPs in the towns to identify the deficiencies, estimate wastewater generation as per population trends, and evaluate the effectiveness of existing infrastructure.
Based on these findings, the project will design and implement systems to meet present and future requirements, it said.
According to the document, key components of the initiative include constructing new STPs and FSTPs, upgrading existing systems, and building efficient networks for transporting wastewater to treatment plants.
The project will also explore recycling treated water for non-potable purposes, such as irrigation or industrial use, the document said.
To ensure sustainability, it said, advanced technologies will be adopted, and robust monitoring systems will be in place throughout the construction phase.
Once operational, the initiative is expected to significantly reduce environmental pollution caused by untreated wastewater.
It will also improve public health by preventing contamination of water sources, it said.
Additionally, the project will promote the sustainable use of water resources by reusing treated water, contributing to conservation efforts in the region.
This transformative effort is set to enhance the Union Territory’s sanitation infrastructure, improving the quality of life for residents while advancing the nation’s vision of a Swachh Bharat.
The document further said that in order to execute the project, the Housing and Urban Development Department of Jammu and Kashmir Government has sought the services of the expert consultants to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) within a period of six months.
While the cost of the project is not mentioned in the document, it is imperative for the selected consultant firm to complete the project within the mission period of SBM 2.0
