JAMMU, Jan 12: Members of Kashmiri Language Union, an organization for promoting and preserving Dogri and Kashmiri languages, today demanded that both the languages should be made compulsory in the curriculum from 1st to 10th standard in Jammu and Kashmir.
Scholars and students of both Kashmiri and Dogri came together to voice their concern over ignoring the local languages as subjects in schools. They sought intervention of Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and J&K Government for making Dogri and Kashmiri as part of curriculum to preserve cultural identity of the region.
They claimed that early decision in this regard will not only help safeguarding these regional languages, but also instill a sense of pride among students for their cultural identity. “By integrating Kashmiri and Dogri into the curriculum, you will pave the way for future generations to stay connected with their roots while fostering cultural diversity,” they said.
These scholars informed that they also met the higher authorities and submitted memorandum in this regard highlighting the urgency for inclusion of Dogri and Kashmiri in curriculum as compulsory subjects. “There has been positive response from the Government and we eagerly look forward to the successful implementation of these assurances,” they said.
Parvaiz Barkat, Dr Ashu Sharma, Sahil Badhyal, Anzar Ali Zargar and Ashak Hussain Lone were part of the delegation that met the higher authorities.
