In the net of Central Bureau of Investigation is the prestigious IRCON International Ltd., the company that has been building the Jammu-Srinagar railway project. CBI has discovered major irregularity in IRCON recalling the tender notice within a month and then allotting the fire fighting Hydrant System in Banihal area to noted Railways Construction Company M/s Gypsum Structural India Private Limited. Some top officers of IRCON have been booked and some more are under the scanner. It is a matter of shame for the indicted persons to have defrauded the public exchequer through clandestine means. They are highly paid functionaries with unimaginable perks and facilities provided to them by the company. IRCON has established its reputation through honest and dedicated work. It commanded great respect from the people in the country after the Konkan Railway Project was completed. But one fails to understand what temped them to play underhand games and bring defamation to an otherwise prestigious construction company. CBI should conduct probing more frequently and more intensively to find out if thee are other spheres in which fraud could have happened at one time or the other.
Interestingly, the CBI has also tumbled on another fraudulent case of about 15 NGOs of the State involved in fake projects of bringing handicraft skills to the people of four districts in the State namely Rajouri, Poonch, Doda and Udhampur. They are alleged never to have held any training camps but having withdrawn lakhs or even crores of rupees in the name of the project that was never there. We would implore the authorities to immediately black list these fraudulent NGOs, recover the money from them and blacklist them for any kind of business with them in future. CBI should also report whether it has found officials of concerned departments also involved in fraudulent practices. Cases should proceed against suspected persons as well.
