SRINAGAR, June 3: Minister for Urban Development & Urban Local Bodies, Nawang Rigzin Jora, today flagged off a fleet of garbage collection & transportation vehicles of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) comprising 4 Garbage Compactor Vehicles (having capacity of 64 Tons Per Truck) and 12 Hooper vehicles taking the existing number to 15 Compactor and 32 Hooper vehicles in order to further improve the solid waste management system in Srinagar city.
Secretary Housing & Urban Development Department, Satish Nehru and Commissioner SMC Dr G N Qasba was also present on the occasion.
With the introduction of this new fleet of Compactor and Hooper Vehicles, Mr Jora said that about 150 open garbage sheds would be closed especially in the areas like Humhama, By-pass Bemina, Batamaloo, Karan Nagar, Lal Chowk, Dalgate, Nishat, Hazratbal, Zakura etc. besides around 8000 households of the city would be covered by way of house to house garbage collection in addition to the 11000 houses already covered.
The Minister said that Srinagar city on daily basis generates over 600 MT garbage and efforts are on to ensure 100 per cent collection of solid waste in the entire city.
Mr. Jora said that under JnNURM, the Union Government has sanctioned Rs. 91.97 crores for developing the integrated Municipal Solid Waste Processing Facility at dumping site Achan for 505 Tons Per Day (TPD) garbage, besides augmenting house to house collection and existing Mechanised Sanitation Fleet.
The Minister added that along with the efforts made by the department it is also important on part of the citizens to ensure that they provide a helping hand in keeping their city clean.
