Srinagar, June 3: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) today said Srinagar city will have no roadside garbage now onwards as modernized vehicles have been added to its solid waste management.
“We shall have no roadside garbage disposal after these vehicles are pressed into service,” SMC Commissioner GN Qasba said before flagging off a fleet of garbage collection vehicles here.
Minister for Urban Development and Urban Local Bodies, Nawang Rigzin Jora today along with other officials flagged off 20 Hopper vehicles and four garbage Compactors procured at a cost of Rs 1.81 crore to modernize and streamline collection and disposal of the solid waste in the city. The four garbage compactors have been given by Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA).
“We have been giving vehicles and equipment worth crores to SMC from time to time under Multi-sector Project for Infrastructure Rehabilitation (MPIR). Today, we gave them four Compactors under JK Urban Sector Development, Investment programme,” said ERA’s Public Relations Officer, Mohammad Azhar.
Jora said the Centre has sanctioned around Rs 92 crore for a Solid Waste Management Project to convert the city into a model one.
“With the introduction of these new vehicles, about 150 number of open garbage sheds would be closed in the areas like Airport, Humhama, Bypass, Bemina, Batamaloo, Karan Nagar, Lal Chowk, Dalgate, Nishat, Hazratbal, Zakura and others,” Jora said.
The project is under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), and has two main components of collection and transportation of solid waste in the city.
“A total amount of Rs 50.42 crore will be spent on treatment and processing of the waste, while Rs 40 crore will be spent on door to door collection of garbage in the city,” Jora said.
He said the city generates around 600 MT of solid waste every day and sought the cooperation of the citizens in ensuring better service to make the city clean and protect the environment.
Jora said about 8000 number of households of the city would be covered by way of house to house garbage collection.
