SRINAGAR, June 4: The Government today admitted before the High Court that about 90 villages, situated near Sandran stream, a confluence of river Jehlum in Anantnag, discharge their sewage into the river.
The report was submitted by Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control Department Srinagar, Mir Javed Jaffer, before the Division Bench Comprising Chief Justice MM Kumar and Justice MH Attar.
Earlier, IFC had submitted a report on which the court had expressed its dissatisfaction and had observed that report regarding left out part for one or other reason is not covered in the report.
The Chief Engineer in his report submitted that the river takes the shape of three Nallahs, namely Aripath, Sandran, and Brinnghi near the town of Anantnag, and upstream of Anantnag to Verinag Jehlum is in the shape of Nallah called Sandran.
The report reads “a number of small villages are situated near it which has a number of raw sewage outlets directly going into the Nallah.”
He further submits that the department had taken up the matter with all concerned departments and they were asked to submit the details of future plans to treat the drainage and sewage before draining into the river.
“But only Chief Engineer UEED has furnished the report with regard to sewage disposal of Srinagar City and report of other departments is still awaited,” the report said.
He further apprised the court regarding steps taken to ensure the implementation of Water Resource Act 2010 about Nallah Sindh and submitted that the department has demolished two more illegal structures situated near the said Nallah.
