SRINAGAR, Mar 17: A militant commander was killed in an encounter with security forces in the Zachaldara area of Kupwara district today.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Krumhoora village in Zachaldara following information about the presence of militants in the area.

Militants opened fire on the search party and it was returned by the security forces leading to an encounter. One militant was killed in retaliatory firing and some arms and ammunition were recovered from the spot.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Mushtaq Chaudhary, told reporters that on a tip off, security forces cordoned Krumbhoora Rajwar area in Handwara this morning. “As soon as the contact was established, the security forces engaged the terrorist, resulting in his killing,” he said.
“The body of the terrorist was retrieved, and based on evidence, he was identified as a Pakistani terrorist Saifullah,” he added
“Saifullah was active in the area for a long time. The security forces recovered an AK rifle, four magazines, grenades, and other materials from the encounter site. The area is currently being sanitized to rule out any further threats,” SSP added.
In the meantime, security forces today detected and defused an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Reshipora Qoimoh area of Kulgam.
An official said that the explosive device was found by a joint team of police and security forces on the roadside at Reshipora Qoimoh in Kulgam district.
“Upon inspection, it was confirmed to be an IED inside a black bag,” he said.
A Bomb Disposal Squad was immediately called to the spot to defuse the IED. The area was cordoned off, and the traffic movement on the Kulgam-Shopian route was suspended as a precautionary measure.
“The Bomb Disposal Squad defused the IED on the spot without causing any damage,” the official said, adding that the traffic movement on the road was later restored.
