Srinagar, Mar 18: The Environmental Policy Group (EPG) today expressed concern over the proposed construction of a flyover connecting MA Road to Rajbagh and a bridge over Polo Ground, calling for the proposal to be scrapped immediately.
In a statement issued here, the Environmental Policy Group (EPG) warned that the proposed flyover and bridge project poses a serious threat to a vital recreational space, which serves as a lifeline for young athletes and community members.
“Polo Ground is more than just a recreational venue; it is a community hub where hundreds of boys and girls gather to engage in sports, indoor games and physical activities,” EPG stated.
The group also raised alarm over the planned felling of Chinar trees, emphasizing that their loss would harm biodiversity and degrade the natural landscape.
Additionally, EPG cautioned that increased impermeable surfaces from new bridges would elevate flood risks.
Calling for an immediate halt to the project, EPG urged the Government to explore alternative solutions to ease traffic congestion.
“It is alarming that more parks and green spaces are being vandalized and converted into construction sites and parking lots,” the group noted.
