World Blood Donor Day celebrated with enthusiasm across State

JAMMU, June 14: World Blood Donor Day was celebrated with enthusiasm and zeal across the State. This day is celebrated each year in the memory of Karl Land Steiner who discovered Blood Groups and revolutionized the field of Transfusion Medicine. This years’ theme was “Safe Blood for Saving Mothers”.
A blood donation camp was organized at Lal Ded Hospital, Srinagar on the occasion of ‘World Blood Donors Day’.
Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir Shailnder Kumar was the chief guest and inaugurated the camp. He also donated blood on the occasion.
Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, Principal, GMC, Project Director, SAP&CS, Medical Superintendent, Lal Ded Hospital, Head Department of Gyneacology and other senior doctors of the hospital were also present.
Post Graduate Department of Blood Transfusion Medicine Government Medical College Jammu celebrated World Blood Donor Day. A month long activities were organized to celebrate the occasion. A number of Voluntary Blood Motivation and Donation Camps were organised. A symposium on the topic “Safe Blood for Saving Mothers” was held at Red Cross Bhawan, Jammu, in which students from different educational institutions participated. Students from college of Fine Arts participated in Poster Making Competition on the theme of promotion of “Voluntary Blood Donation”. Principal and Dean, GMC Dr Ghanshyam Dev inaugurated Voluntary Blood Donation Camps at Blood Bank GMC and at attendants Sarai Maheshpura. Dr Vijay Sawhney, Prof and HoD, Department of Blood Transfusion Medicine, GMC was also present. Mementoes and certificates were given to the winners and the participants.
A one day awareness campaign regarding World Blood Donors Day was organized at CHC Katra. District development commissioner (DDC) Reasi Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary was the chief guest, while guest of honour was CMO Reasi Dr Younis Chowdhary. BMO Katra Dr Gopal Dutt presented the welcome address. Dr Harsh Sharma, Physician Specialist, Dr Neelu Sharma, Gynecologist CHC Katra and Indu Bala, Female Multipurpose Health Worker presented their lectures on the benefit of blood donation. The programme was hosted by Dr Vijay Kumar, Dental Surgeon, CHC Katra.
A voluntary blood donation camp was held at Government Hospital Gandhi Nagar on the occasion of World Blood Donors Day. The camp was inaugurated by Dr Gurjeet Singh, Deputy Director Health Services (HQ) Jammu in presence of Dr Romesh Gupta Medical Superintendent and other staff members. During the inaugural session Dr Gurjeet Singh appealed to the volunteers between the age group of 18 to 60 years to come forward and donate the blood for saving the precious lives. The students, staff members and the relations of staff members donated the blood with great enthusiasm.
Sacred Heart College of Education celebrates World Blood Donor’s Day. An essay writing competition was organised in which all the students participated. Dr RD Wazir, former Superintendent District Hospital Samba highlighted the importance of blood for saving the life. Chairperson of the college Rajni Bala also highlighted the importance of the day. Managing Director Hari Singh Chib, Principal Dr KK Tiwari, besides may others also expressed their views. The programme was organised by the NSS Programme Officer Prof Sheetal Khajuria.
On the eve of World Blood Donors Day, Sant Nirankari Mandal Branch Pounichak organised a voluntary blood donation camp at Blood Bank, GMC. Devotees of the Mission participated in this camp. Dr Ghanshyam Dev, Principal and Dean GMC inaugurated the camp, which was attended by Ajit Singh, Zonal Incharge, Sant Nirankari Mandal, Zone 1 J&K, Dr Vijay Sawhney, HOD Blood Bank, Dr Meena Sidhu, Rattan Chand, IP Sharma and other prominent personalities. The camp was held in collaboration with Blood and Transfusion Department of GMC and JKSACS.
Young Blood Association in collaboration with Bhartiya Jan Sewa Sansthan organized a free blood grouping camp at Shakti Ashram, Rehari, on the occasion of “World Blood Donors Day”. The Camp was inaugurated by the Founder Chairman YBA Anil K Padha who is also the Working President of BJSS accompanied by GD Pandey, Joint General Secretary BJSS. Among others present were BK Gupta, Dr VK Gupta and Babu Ram Manhas.
District Police Doda also organized a blood donation camp at District Hospital Doda, wherein seven police personnel besides Army, CRPF and civil volunteers donated their blood. The camp was inaugurated by deputy Commissioner, Doda, Mubarak Singh.
Acharya Shri Chander College Of Medical Sciences hospital organized a Voluntary Blood donation camp in the premises of Blood Bank ASCOMS which was inaugurated by the Director Principal ASCOMS Dr. R.P. Kudyar with Director Medical Dr. S.S. Soodan  Medical Superintendent ASCOMS Dr. Satish Sharma as guests of honour. Medical Faculty, Doctors, Interns, Medical Students, members Dera Saacha Sauda Organization donated their blood.
Dr. KumKum Sharma Professor & Head Blood Bank said every day, about 800 women die from pregnancy or childbirth-related complications. Severe bleeding during delivery and after childbirth is a major cause of death and long-term disability. The goal of the campaign is to increase awareness about why timely access to safe blood and blood products is essential for all countries as part of a comprehensive approach to prevent maternal deaths, she said.
