JAMMU, June 21: Acting swiftly on the complaints of consumers, officers of the Legal Metrology Department headed by Joint Controller and Deputy Controller (Consumer Protection) Jammu booked M/s Vishal Mega Mart, Bahu Plaza for overcharging on packets of spices and M/s Partap Exclusive, Aquaf Market, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu.
According to official sources, a consumer namely Arushi Choudhary purchased house hold items from M/s Vishal Store and scrutinized billing minutely in respect to MRP declared on the packets. She found a packet of Everest Lal Mirch 200g marked with MRP Rs. 48-00 (inclusive of all taxes) against charged price of Rs. 52. The consumer immediately lodged a written complaint with the department and taking cognizance of the complaint, the department immediately swung into action and found the complaint genuine. The remaining packets of the item were seized along-with the bill as an evidence of overcharging and the firm was booked under the relevant provision of the law and a notice was issued to the management.
In another complaint lodged by a consumer namely P.K. Dhar regarding alteration of MRP fixed by the manufacturer on the bathroom sleepers, the department also conducted a detailed inspection of M/s Partap Exclusive and seized more than 100 pairs of shoes in pre-packed form not adhering to the mandatory declarations required to be labelled and affixed for the information of consumer.
As per the law, all the prepacked commodities should declare mandatory declarations like MRP, PKD, Net Weight/ Size and importantly consumer help line number so that consumer is well aware of the ingredients of the pre-packed commodity to be purchased by him.
The owner of the firm was served seizure memo and was asked to produce the relevant bills for further scrutiny to ascertain the actual cost and address of the manufacturer for further proceedings.
