SRINAGAR, June 23: Government today foiled Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF)’s Quit Kashmir march by imposing restriction in the Civil Lines areas of Srinagar and detained JKLF chairman and its activists.
The march and shutdown called by JKLF was the part of party’s ‘Quit Kashmir’ campaign that they launched today.
Huge contingents of police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were deployed in Civil Lines areas including Lal Chowk, Budhshah Chowk, Maisuma, Gawkadal and Barbarshah to foil the march. Restrictions were also imposed in these areas.
Malik, who had gone into hiding, appeared in Maisuma along with his supporters and tried to march towards Lal Chowk. Carrying banners and placards, the protesters who were trying to march towards Lal Chowk were detained by Police. Malik’s supporters pelted stones on police men.
The JKLF leaders and activists also staged protests in Batamaloo and Makhdoom Sahab areas of city, reports said.
Meanwhile, shutdown was observed in some parts of Srinagar. Shops, commercial establishments, schools, colleges and petrol pumps remained closed. However, traffic was plying some areas.
The impact of shutdown was more in Old City areas of Srinagar where roads presented a deserted look.
