UDHAMPUR, June 26: Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed and vehicular traffic was stopped for more than eight hours following leakage of an LPG Tanker that rolled down near Lower Munda Check Post in Qazigund, last night.
The LPG tanker JK14-8335, which was on way from Jammu to Srinagar, met with accident after crossing Jawahar tunnel resulting into major leakage of gas. Driver and cleaner of the Tanker, who received minor injuries in the accident, were evacuated by the Traffic and Police officials.
However, major leakage of gas from the Tanker forced the authorities to halt traffic on both sides of the highway resulting into long queues of vehicles at Udhampur, Chenani, Kud, Batote, Ramban and Banihal as well as on the other side of the tunnel.
As precautionary measure, Fire Brigade vehicles were rushed to the spot from Banihal and Anantnag. Water was continuously poured on the leaked tanker for more than ten hours till gas leakage came to an end around 10 am this morning following which the vehicles were allowed to move.
According to SP Ramban Javed Mattoo, vehicular movement was totally halted as no chance could be taken and it took more than eight hours to restore the traffic.
Before resumption of traffic, officials of Indian Oil Corporation were also called who certified that it was safe to ply vehicles on the highway and only after this certification traffic was restored.
