NEW DELHI, July 2:
India and Singapore today decided to hold year-long series of events to mark the golden jubilee of diplomatic relations between the two countries and further expand the “canvas of bilateral relationship.” This was decided at a meeting here between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Singapore Foreign Minister K Shanmugam who called on Mr Modi and conveyed his Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s message that relations between the two countries, based on mutual trust, should be made even stronger through a series of concrete steps.
During the meeting, Mr Modi said his Government planned a major thrust in low-cost and affordable housing and sought Singapore’s assistance in construction technology for this purpose.
“It was planned that a year-long series of events be held to mark the completion of 50 years of diplomatic relations between Singapore and India. Both the Prime Ministers expressed keenness that the occasion should be celebrated in a way that further expanded the canvas of bilateral relationship,” a spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said. Mutual cooperation in skill development, development of smart cities, water management, shipping, port management and coastal development was discussed in depth. Observing that Singapore is one of the top tourist destinations worldwide, the Prime Minister suggested that Indian states should hold one-month-long special campaigns in Singapore to highlight their tourism potential during the celebrations of the 50 years of relationship. The meeting was also attended by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Lim Thuan Kuan, High Commissioner of Singapore to India, and senior officials from both the sides. (UNI)
