Police thrashes women protesting over water scarcity

SRINAGAR, July 10: Scores of women were today thrashed by police in Saraibal, injuring two critically, one of whom was shifted to SKIMS.
Reports said residents of Saraibal area, who have been demanding smooth water supply from Public Health Engineering Department from the last two years, today blocked the Airport road in the morning in here to protest against the PHE for failing to supply drinking water to the area.
The agitated women said PHE is unable to provide them potable water in the area and is causing inconvenience to them.
The protesting women blocked the road which caused huge traffic jams on the road and left hundreds of vehicles stranded.
Later, police used lathi-charge to disperse the agitating women.
“Many women were injured in the police thrashing, one woman Haseena was rushed to SKIMS as she received head injuries,” said Umar Ahmad, a resident of Saraibal.
Ahmad said the police thrashing of women angered the youth and they started sloganeering against police, and police picked up a youth from his home.
Following police action, Maharaja Bazar and Saraibal markets observed shut down.
