Patients, attendants face hardships due to mal-functioning of lift

JAMMU, July 18: The only lift used to shift the patients from Emergency Ward of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) to Recovery or any other Wards are not functioning properly, owing to which the attendants of the patients have to face manifold problems while shifting their patients to respective wards.
“Two lifts were installed in the GMC Hospital to shift the patients to their respective wards around a decade back and presently only one lift is functioning as the second went out of order some five years back”, official sources told Excelsior.
These lifts were installed so that after getting initial treatment in the Emergency Ward of GMC Hospital, the patients can be easily shifted to the recovery or any other wards of the hospital for their further treatment”, they said.
The lifts installed in the hospital were very old which sometimes came to standstill, due to which the patients, being shifted to their respective wards have to face lot of problems, sources added.
The situation is so grave that the only lift carrying patients to wards is also not properly working and sometimes becomes defunct putting the life of patients and their attendants to grave risk, sources said.
They added that the lift remains closed during the night and the patients, who have been shifted from the Emergency Ward to any other wards of hospital, have to face lots of inconvenience and they have to move via foot track which is time consuming and risky.
“Not only patients and their attendants, the officials of the hospital were also seen using this lift various times”, sources said.
Due to heavy rush and excess load on the lift, the department concerned have to stop the functioning of the lift so that no untoward incident could take place, they added.
Meanwhile, to provide better and secure services to the patients, the proposal to replace these old lifts with the new ones was forwarded to the Medical Education Department. The proposal of one lift was sanctioned and the replacement of another was abandoned for the reason best known to the higher authorities, sources added.
One of the attendants Ashok Kumar while talking to Excelsior said that hundreds of people use this lone lift to shift their patients to wards and many times it was noticed that the lift remains closed for couple of hours, causing great inconvenience to the patients.
“We have to shift our patient from Emergency ward to recovery ward and when we reached near the lift, we found it closed and we shifted our patient by foot track”, he added.
People visiting the hospitals are mostly under stress and always undergone through trauma and tension due suffering of their dear ones-so doctors and medical staff must behave humbly with the patients and their attendants” said Ranju Devi an attendant.
She said that due to non functional of lifts in the hospital, the people and the patients shifted to top floors of the hospital face lot of inconvenience, particularly while going to deliver samples for test or for the collection of reports.
Another attendant Vishal Kohli said that his mother was admitted in the Emergency Department of the hospital since last couple of days and after recovering, doctors advised us to shift the patient to recovery ward in late hours. “When we were shifting our patient to the recovery ward, we found the lift closed and after hectic efforts, shifted our patient to ward through foot-track’’, she added.
He said there is immediate need to install more lifts so that people could not suffer on account of health delivery system.
When contacted AEE, Mechanical Department, GMC Hospital Rita Rehan said that the non-functional lift has been replaced with the new one and its work is almost completed.
“Within month, the new lift will be operational, which will surely ensure the functioning of both the lifts at same time and will also bring respite for the patients and their attendants”, she stated.
Due to heavy rush, the lone lift sometimes has been put to halt, she added.
