JAMMU, July 25: Security forces and police today detected and defused eight 84mm anti tank rocket shells on the banks of canal at village Rattian under the jurisdiction of Miran Sahib police station.
Reports said some civilians observe the rocket shells lying in a bag on the banks of canal early this morning and informed police.
Police parties led by SHO Miran Sahib Inspector Sanjeev Chib and other senior officers reached the spot and cordoned off the area. Police restricted movement of civilians in the village.
The Bomb Disposal Squads reached the spot and safely defused the shells after the explosive devices were examined by senior officers of Army, BSF and police.
Reports said the shells had been lying on banks of the river and it was being presumed that they had either been dumped there by some unidentified persons or had come out with silt of the canal during de-silting work.
Police have registered a case in the recovery of rocket shells for further investigations. However, no arrests have been made so far.
Police said some of the rocket shells were live, though they had been rusted. They were trying to ascertain whether the shells had been picked up from the border or smuggled from across the border.
