Women form a half of a nation’s strength (population). For judging the development of a society, we need to study the status not only of men but also of the women. The growth of society is not possible unless and until women is not given rights.
Female gender has shaped both the legal and cultural landscapes of all countries. Although numerically equal in population women are a minority group in terms of their power and influence. Inequality in genders persists in a variety of social institutions. Some of the differences might at first appear minor or natural, but infact they have snowballing effects on the status of a women. There are huge gaps between the rights and status of men and women but if a woman is considered as a better half of men these gaps have to be bridged.
The unity of the state is promoted by the equality of both the sexes. Equality and freedom, however evaded women as in the chequered history of mankind one finds that different and disparate cultures, however distant they may be in time and space, have one thing in common and that is contempt for women. This unequal status of a women no doubt is insulting to human dignity. Women can develop fully only when given a chance to participate in cultural, social and economic scenario of the national development. Only then a women’s social and family life can stabilize. All forms of discrimination on grounds of gender forced unrest.
To understand the maintenance of women’s status, one needs to analyze the specific content of socially constructed relationship between the sexes. The different and complex images are fixed to women in a variety of ways. As a result, women find themselves trapped in these stereotypical attributes of the society. So, the need of the hour is to wake up and let the women feel that she is the pivot of our society without whom a society is not complete.
