Protest against doctor for demanding graft

NOWSHERA, July 16: The people staged strong protest with the SDM Nowshera after a doctor at the local Govt Sub District hospital allegedly demanded Rs 5000 from a patient for minor surgery while the medical staff went on strike after the Magistrate initiated action today.
Reports said a patient Mohinder Singh who had six fingers, wanted to remove one of them through surgery at Government hospital. He was examined by Surgeon specialist Dr Pardeep Singh posted at Nowshera hospital. According to Mohinder and his family members the doctor asked him to reach hospital before 8 am and also demanded Rs 5000. The poor villager had no money and told the matter to relative and neighbours.
They took serious note of the issue and lodged strong protest with the hospital authorities. Then with the assistance of local citizens, they moved to the office of SDM Nowshera Rajinder Kumar Khajuria and lodged their strong protest with him. They also submitted a written complaint against the doctor. The SDM assured the deputation that a fair inquiry would be conducted and the doctor if found guilty will be punished.
Meanwhile, the hospital staff at Nowshera went on strike alleging that wrong allegations were raised against the doctor. The doctors and para-medical staff struck work and sat on dharna outside BMO office. The patients suffered a lot in the hospital due to the strike of the Health employees.
SDM Nowshera when contacted said that a deputation came to his office with written complaint against Dr Pardeep Singh. It was mentioned that doctor at Government hospital demanded graft of Rs 5000 from the patient for minor surgery. He said an inquiry into the matter is being conducted. The guilty will be punished. The SDM said, the hospital staff went on strike which is unjustified. They were conveyed to resume their duties.
