JAMMU, Aug 11: Week-long Sanskrit celebrations began at Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, Shri Ranbir Campus, Kot Bhalwal, Jammu, here today.
Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Shantmanu was the chief guest in the inaugural function, while Prof Priyatam Chandra Shastri, former Principal of the Campus and Prof P K Koul, Principal, Trikuta Degree College, were the guest of honour and special guest, respectively. The function was presided over by Prof Ramanuja Devanathan, Principal of the Campus.
Speaking on the occasion, Divisional Commissioner, Shantmanu appreciated that the Sansthan has decided to take out a Sanskrit rally in the town as a part of Sanskrit Week celebrations. He expressed the hope that such celebrations would help dispel the impression that Sanskrit is a dead language. He pointed out that anything that has lasted from thousands of years must be having something great in it to make such longevity possible. “Hence, the students and scholars of this language and literature should never let inferiority complex invade their minds. Rather they should be proud that they are the inheritors of such a great legacy of perennial wisdom,” he said.
Prof P K Koul, Principal, Trikuta Degree College, said that Sanskrit was a great ancient language which had given the world great philosophies and various branches of knowledge.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Priyatam Chandra Shastri said that Sanskrit was the interlinking thread of the Indian culture even today. “Sanskrit is spoken from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and from Gujarat to Assam with the same pronunciation. Thus, it promotes the national unity and integrity of India. Moreover, it is best suited to deal with the moral degradation which seems to have crept in our national life,” he said and underlined his view by reciting his poem “Sanskritam Amritam”.
In his presidential address, Prof Ramanuja Devanathan said that just as the Vedas were Apaurusheya – having non-human origins, Sanskrit, too, the language of the Vedas, is Apaurusheya.
Earlier, Prof Manoj Kumar Mishra, the convener, Sanskrit Week highlighted the various activities to be undertaken during the celebrations.
Highlight of the celebrations is going to be the Sanskrit Rally to be taken out on August 14, which shall pass through the main markets of the town. The valedictory function would be held on the evening of August 14.
