JAMMU, Aug 13: Days before the passage of the National Judicial Appointments Commission Bill, 2014 by voice vote in Lok Sabha, the Supreme Court Collegium has cleared 12 persons for appointment as Judges in Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Reliable sources told EXCELSIOR that the list included seven lawyers and five lower Court Judges. “Punjab and Haryana High Court lawyers B S Walia and Jaishree Thakur are likely to join Jammu and Kashmir High Court and Rajasthan respectively after being appointed as High Court Judge”, sources added.
The lawyers will move immediately after their appointment as the Supreme Court Collegium, in its first such directive in nearly two decades, ordered immediate transfer of the two lawyers while clearing their names for elevation to the Bench.
Among those cleared for elevation included senior lawyer Deepak Sibal, cousin of former Union Law Minister Kapil Sibal.
Simultaneously, the Collegium had rejected two names out of the 15 names recommended by the Punjab and Haryana High Court Collegium for elevation to the High Court Bench. These included senior lawyer Sunil Chadha and a District and Session Judge from Haryana, Manjit Singh.
The elevation of Raminder Jain, a senior Session Judge in Haryana had been ‘deferred for further consideration.’
