GDC Udhampur organizes lecture on ‘Herbal Wealth in J&K’

JAMMU, Sept 21: An Extension lecture on ‘Herbal Wealth in J&K’ was organized by the Department of Botany of Govt Degree College Udhampur in its Conference Hall, here today.
Organized under Star College Scheme of Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India, this programme was presided over by the Principal of the College Prof S S Bhalwal. O P Sharma Vidyarathi, Chief Conservator of Forests , Department of Ecotourism and Wildlife was the resource person.
In his presentation, he urged the students to come closer to nature to understand the basis of its sustainability. He said J&K is an immeasurable treasure of herbal wealth but it can only be recognized through an understanding of traditional wisdom and knowledge.
He gave detailed information on around 80 plant species like Artimicia nilgirica, Berberis lyceum, Arnebia benthami, Atropa belladonna, Picorrhiza karrua, Saussurea lapa, Aconitum heterophyllum, Trillium gouvanium, Acorus calamus and located them in their socio-cultural context.
Later, he interacted with the students and staff in the College Botanical Garden which hosts many rare plant species.
Prof S S Bhalwal in his presidential address expressed his gratitude to resource person for his enlightening talk that exposed a plethora of information which otherwise would remain away from young generation.
Earlier, the programme began with the lighting of the traditional lamp followed by welcome address by Prof Romesh Kumar Atri, HoD Botany.
Dr Udhey Bhanu, Convener Star College Scheme of DBT, Govt of India presented vote of thanks, while Prof Sudhir Singh conducted the proceedings of the programme.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were Dr Anil Khajuria, Prof G R Verma, Prof Jawaid Sarvar and Prof Sumiksha Thakur.
