JAMMU, Sept 21: Army last night foiled an attempted action by the Border Action Team (BAT) of Pakistan Army on the Line of Control (LoC) between Kanga Nullah and MS Tekri in Balakote sector of Poonch district while troops of Rashtriya Rifles and police recovered a consignment of arms and ammunition at Chika Khet in Kandi area of Rajouri district. A live mortar shell was seized at village Avtal in Ramgarh sector of Samba district.
Reliable sources said troops thwarted BAT action near an Army post close to the LoC between Kanga Nullah and MS Tekri in Balakote sector of Poonch district at 10 pm last night. Troops immediately opened firing to neutralize the BAT members.
Sources said the BAT members infiltrated close to the Indian side and attempted an action on the Army post but the alert troops thwarted the BAT plot. Army personnel opened firing and forced the BAT members, who were four to six in numbers to retreat.
The BAT action was aimed at targeting the Indian Army jawans, sources confirmed. Army forward posts all along the LoC have been put on high alert after the failed BAT action, they said.
The previous night a group of four to six militants had tried to infiltrate into the Indian territory from Balakote sector but Army had thwarted the plot.
Army has reports that a number of militants were waiting across the LoC to infiltrate into the Indian territory both in Jammu and Kashmir regions. However, troops in twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch have so far thwarted all attempts of militants to intrude into this side.
Meanwhile, troops of 60 Rashtriya Rifles and Rajouri Police today recovered a consignment of arms and ammunition from village Chika Khet under the jurisdiction of Kandi police station in Rajouri district, SSP Rajouri Mubassir Latifi said.
He said recoveries were made after more than two hours long joint search operation conducted by Rajouri police and Army.
Recoveries included one AK-56 rifle, two AK magazines, 239 rounds, eight sniper rounds, one LMG round and some medicines.
The consignment reportedly belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen outfit, which was once active in the area, sources said.
Army and police conducted searches in the area. However, no arrests were made from the spot.
Meanwhile, security forces today recovered a live 81mm mortar shell from village Mallu Chak in Avtaal area of Ramgarh sector in Samba district.
The mortar shell was reported to have been fired by Pakistani Rangers during heavy firing and shelling in the month of August this year and remained unexploded.
Civilians detected the shell and informed BSF and police, which cordoned off the area and destroyed it safely.
