Rs 5,000 fine slapped on shopkeepers

SRINAGAR, July 21: Legal Metrology Department officials today slapped a penalty of Rs. 5,000 on various shopkeepers during surprise check in Srinagar city.
A spokesman said the field executives of the department under the supervision of Deputy Controller (Enforcement) Kashmir conducted extensive market inspections and booked 11 traders for violating Weights and Measures laws.
The spokesman said that markets of Soura, Lal Bazar, Rambagh and Chanapora were inspected by the officials. He said that two milk vendors were penalized for using non-standard measures and two more traders were found indulging in weighing less quantity.
The spokesman said that Inspector, Legal Metrology Circle-1 registered a case against the erring traders under Section 39 of the Standards of Weights and Measures (Enforcement) Act, 1997. He said a penal sum of Rs. 5000 was collected during the inspection.
