JAMMU, Oct 6: The Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu Local Centre celebrated World Habitat Day by organizing a seminar on the theme topic “Voices from Slums”.
Large number of Engineers from various walks of life participated in the seminar wherein Er Kiran Wattal, Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation, was the chief guest while Er Hem Chander Jerath, FIE, Chairman of Jammu Local Centre, presided over the function.
Five speakers presented papers on the theme topic namely. They included Er S C Thukral, FIE; Er P K Nanda, MIE; Er B L Rawal, MIE; Er Vijay Kumar Sharma, AMIE and Er Supinder Jeet Singh, AMIE.
The speakers dwelt at length about the theme topic describing the state of slum dwellers with particular reference to J&K State. They advocated for adoption of such policies and plans by all the stakeholders like Governments, Civil Society etc so that problems of slum dwellers are addressed with the available resources. They also requested them to check the rapid migration from rural areas to urban areas and provide the basic amenities in the rural areas itself so that influx of population growth in urban areas is checked and mushrooming growth of slums can be eliminated.
Er Kiran Wattal informed the house that all the slums in the State of J&K have been identified and Government has been fully informed about rehabilitation of all the slum dwellers so that they are provided the basic necessities of life.
Er H C Jerath, made the audience aware about the World Habitat Day celebrations worldwide and the theme topic for this year vis – a – vis J&K State.
Er Mohinder Singh, MIE; Honorary Secretary conducted the proceedings of the function and presented the vote of thanks.
