JAMMU, Oct 13: The Jammu and Kashmir Sikh Council members staged protest and urged upon the State Government to start protection bund and allied works along river Tawi as the recent floods have caused extensive damages in Beli Charana and other adjoining areas.
The members led by State president Harmohinder Singh assembled at Beli Charana and started protest. Women of the locality also joined them. They were shouting slogans in support of their demands. The movement of vehicles was also disrupted for some time.
Meanwhile, in a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, State president of the J&K Sikh Council, Harmohinder Singh, has drawn the attention of the Government towards the massive damage caused by river Tawi due to recent floods. He said in Beli Charana and other low lying areas, the Tawi flood caused extensive damage. There was breach of bund at several places due to which massive land erosion took place. It also happened in Phallian Mandal Tawi Island area. Many houses and crops suffered damages.
In order to save the public from further damages, protection bund and other allied works along left bank of Nikki Tawi be initiated without any delay. It is also matter of grave concern that no relief/ compensation has been provided to those who suffered damages. The PWD has constructed an alternate road for Nikki Tawi area due to extension of Jammu Airport but adjacent to Lower Beli Charana there is no drainage or culvert in the area which is main cause of destruction of many houses. He also flayed the concerned MLA Raman Bhalla for paying no heed towards this issue. He demanded that concerned authorities be directed to launch work on war footing.
