JAMMU, Oct 15: There is another slip between cup and lips for the PhD Awardees and Medalists from 2007 to 2012 as the Jammu University has once again postponed its Special Convocation.
The Convocation, which was scheduled to be held on October 24 this month, has been postponed and it shall be held now on November 14, next month, official sources informed the Excelsior.
Decision in this regard was taken following reservations expressed by the Jammu University Teachers Association (JUTA) over the scheduled date, which falls between the festivals of Diwali and Bhaiya Dhooj besides Vishwakarma Day on the same date.
The JUTA had explained that a number of persons, who are to be awarded Degrees and Medals, would not be in a position to attend the Convocation due to the important festivals of Diwali and Bhaiya Dhooj while Technical staff would also not attend the duties on account of Vishwakarma Day on October 24.
Following these reservations, the Vice-Chancellor Prof M P S Ishar took up the matter with Governor N N Vohra, who is Chancellor of the University, and a decision to postpone the mega event was taken, sources said.
This is for the third time that the Ph D Awardees and Medalists from 2007 to 2012 had a slip between cup and the lips and now they would have to wait a few more days for rendezvous with the much awaited moment of their academic achievement.
These more than 600 PhD Awardees and Medalists of Jammu University, who passed out from 2007 to 2012, are to be awarded Degrees and Medals during the special event as they could not be accommodated in the recently held Convocation on September 1, where President of India, Pranab Mukherjee was the chief guest.
During September 1 Convocation, which was held after a gap of seven years, the PhD awardees and Medalists of only 2013 were awarded Degrees while those from 2007 to 2012 were left out due to time constraint.
To award Medals and Degrees to these left out candidates, Special Convocation was announced to be held on September 16 and all arrangements in this regard were on place but the event had to be postponed at the eleventh hour following devastating floods in the State.
The fresh date of October 24 was announced last week but following the reservations of JUTA and others, the University once again postponed the event thus making these left out Ph D awardees and Medalist to wait for a few more days for the occasion.
