SAMBA, Oct 25: A training programme on organic Basmati cultivation was organized at Nandni Hills here in which 80 farmers participated.
The programme was inaugurated by A K Malhotra, Joint Director Agriculture Extension Jammu who asked farmers to grow Basmati organically.
He said due to continuous use of chemicals fertilizers and pesticides the condition of the soil has been deteriorated to a great extent and the environment has also been polluted to a significant level.
Mr Jamwal said the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has resulted residual effect in the vegetables, fruits and other eatables resulting into number of diseases being caused to human beings and animals as well.
He advised farmers to grow Basmati by using organic manure, vermin composite, bio pesticides and bio-fertilizers to improve the health sustainable agriculture.
Mr Malhotra said the Department has engaged Sarveshwar Organic Foods Ltd, Jammu to facilitate the farmers for growing rice organically.
He said that Basmati 370 is grown in districts of Jammu, Samba and Kathua especially in R S Pura belt of district Jammu because of peculiar aroma is the hotly cased item in most of cosmopolitan cities of India and of now has also entered tin international market.
The welcome address was made by Chief Agriculture Officer, Samba, K S Sambyal. Expert lectures were delivered by Vijay Bushan, Project Director ATMA, Subash Sharma , Deputy Director Project Officer ATMA, Ashok Gupta, Ramesh Razdan, Neelu Salathia and others.
