Srinagar, Nov 17: Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi, who arrived here for two-day visit to help in rebuilding the lives of the flood victims of Kashmir, said that he will help the victims in a big way once a development oriented Government takes over in the State by the end of this year.
Oberoi while distributing relief among the flood victims, said he wanted to help the people affected by the floods. As part of his efforts to help the flood victims, he distributed winter-sets, comprising of bedding items and other things to the affected people.
The actor said that he is waiting for the elections to be over and a new development oriented Government to take over for starting his work. “I will surely think of a lot of ways to help the affected people, like adopting a village completely destroyed by the floods,” he said.
Oberoi also assured the management of the Voluntary Medicare Society that he will rebuilt their hospital and other buildings that were damaged in floods.
The actor said that he will raise funds for flood victims and appeal his friends for contributions. “I had always wanted to visit Kashmir but in happier times. Unfortunately, the floods hit the state and seeing the destruction caused by it, I thought it was the time to help the affected people. I will try my best to help the people in any way I can. I will organise fund raisers and I appeal my friends and fans to contribute towards helping the people here,” he said.
The actor while speaking to reporters said that bias against the people of Kashmir and northeast India needs to be shed to give the youth from these places a chance to connect with their counterparts in rest of the country.
“We say that we are ready to go to a war but would not let anyone have even an inch of our land as Kashmir is ours. We have raised this slogan of ‘Kashmir Hamara Hai so many times, when will we raise the slogan of ‘Kashmiri Hamare Hai. When will we shed that bias?” he asked.
“And when the people of Kashmir also shed that bias, then there will be a chance to be one and a connection will be created among the youth of the country,” Oberoi said.
The actor said the issue of Kashmir and northeastern states was not about land but about the people living there.”We should not say that Assam is ours, we should say that the people of northeast are ours. People of northeast are beaten when they visit Delhi. The people of Delhi call them ‘Chinese’…when the Chinese forces enter even an inch into our territory on the northeast boundary, there is panic and we say how did they enter our territory as northeast is ours. When would we say that the people of northeast are ours? It is not a matter of land but people,” he said.
