JKDF protests against power crisis, alleges discrimination with Jammu

JAMMU, July 25: A protest demonstration was held by Jammu Kashmir Democratic Front (JKDF) against the unscheduled power cuts in front of Chief Engineer, P.D.D office at Canal Head, Bhagwati Nagar, here today.
Hundreds of JKDF activists from different parts of the city and outskirts participated in the demonstration which was led by Anil Gupta its Chairman. The protestors raised slogans against the Government and P.D.D authorities.
Speaking to media later, Anil Gupta said “the power curtailment for more than schedule hours has been a cause of concern for the people of Jammu region. It has made the life of people miserable especially during this hot and humid Summer. Students are the worst sufferers as they cannot concentrate on studies due to power curtailments which affected their education”
Gupta said water supply is being affected besides huge loss to business and industry of Jammu. Despite receiving huge revenue from this region, Jammuites are the worst sufferers of power crisis, he added.
While criticizing the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, Gupta said, ” a Gas Turbine at Pampore has been established by Government with the help of J&K Power Development Corporation (PDC) to generate electricity for Kashmir during the acute winters. This Gas Turbine is producing total 100 Mega Watt power. The cost of production of power per unit in the Pampore Gas Turbine is Rs 20/- as compared to normal power generation cost of Rs. 3.50/- per unit. The cost of supplying power to households in Kashmir during 3 months of Winters is Rs.35 lakh per day.
The prominent JKDF activists who took part in the protest included Murari Lal Balgotra, Krishan Lal, Arun Khanna, Prashant Puri, Munish Khajuria, Shruti Khajuria, Vinoo Khanna, Monika Gupta, Raja Vivek, Ajay Manhas, Ravi Mehra, etc.
Later the delegation also called on Chief Engineer M&RE Shanaz Goni and discussed the issue with her.
