SRINAGAR, July 25: A roadside camp of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) that was in the main market of Bandipora town in North Kashmir was removed after more than two decades following protests by locals.
The CRPF camp in State Bank of India (SBI) at main chowk Bandipora was removed following improvement in the overall situation in the district. In the morning when locals woke up, the CRPF had abandoned the camp that was in the main market of the town.
This was the first CRPF camp and bunker that was removed in the district since the eruption of militancy in early 90s.
The shifting of the CRPF camp had gained momentum for last two years when State Government started removing bunkers from Srinagar city.
Hundreds of people last week protested in Bandipora against the presence of the CRPF camp and bunker in the main market of the district headquarter and demanded its removal.
The protest was led by tehsil president of Bandipora Awami Mahaz, Ghulam Hassan Mir. The Authorities had assured the protesters that the camp will be shifted.
