JAMMU, Dec 8: Some NSUI activists and Polytechnic students were injured while a few others were detained after Police resorted to baton charging when they were protesting and trying to block ever-busy Bikram Chowk road, here today.
The protesting students of Government and other institutions, led by NSUI were demanding ‘carry-on’ opportunity for those declared fail by the State Board of Technical Education in the recently held examination.
Shouting slogans in support of their demands, the protesting students held a strong demonstration in front of the Government Polytechnic, Bikram Chowk, and then tried to disrupt the vehicular movement by staging a dharna on the road.
This prompted the police to swung into action and resorting to lathicharge on the protesting students. In the Police action, NSUI State president Neeraj Kundan among four students sustained injuries. The police also detained six students who were released later on.
The trouble erupted this morning around 12 noon when a number of Polytechnic students, led by NSUI, assembled in front of the college gate and held a protest demonstration there. They were demanding carry-on opportunity for the students, whose answer scripts were allegedly lost in the recent floods and have been declared fail or shown absent in the examination.
While addressing the gathering, NSUI president Neeraj Kundan lamented that  the students were protesting for the last five days and had also submitted a memorandum to the State Board of Technical Education, which had earlier agreed to promote those  whose answer scripts were lost in the recent flood.  However, the Board authorities are now backtracking from their promise for the reasons best known to them and the students have no option other than to adopt an agitational path, he added
Others who addressed the protest demonstration, included Avijyot Singh, Ranjodh Singh and Sunny Parihar who vowed to continue the struggle to a logical conclusion.
