Jammu, Dec 9: As per their announcement, all the Class IV employees and Casual Labourers of Jammu University observed token protest against the suspension of their two colleagues for alleged laxity of duty in checking defacement of a stone plate replicating inauguration of the university by then Chief Minister Sheikh Mohd Abdullah.
Shouting slogans and demanding immediate reinstatement of the suspended Watchmen, the protesting employees suspended official work for two hours. They took out a procession on the campus and also held a demonstration in front of the Old Administration block in JU.
The protest was organized under the banner of Jammu University Non-Gazetted Employees Union, the body of class-IV employees and Casual Workers in JU.
While addressing the protesters, NGEU president Vijay Sharma alleged that the university authorities were making the poor Watchmen as sacrificial goat. “They were not at fault because one of them was on duty in the Law Department and other in the Guest House whereas the incident of defacement had taken place near the play ground,” he explained and alleged that the authorities were not looking for real culprits.
NGEU general secretary Banarsi Lal announced that the employees would continue their daily token strike till their suspended colleagues are reinstated. “The suspended employee are about to retire within one year and have good character besides unblemished service record,” he added.
Meanwhile, JKPDTEU president Suresh Sharma also extended his organization’s support to JU NGEU over the issue.
On the other hand, NSF has demanded the Chancellor’s intervention for action against the culprits responsible for defacement of the replica stone.
Continuing their protest over the issue, some NSF activists assembled outside the Campus Main Gate and held a demonstration there. Led by NSF president Sukhdev Singh, the protesting students raised slogans against the university authorities and the Vice-Chancellor for their alleged failure to take action against the culprits.
While addressing the NSF activists, Sukhdev Singh alleged that members of the inquiry committee, looking into the incident, were biased and therefore no fair probe was expected from them. He appealed the Governor to intervene into the matter and constitute an independent panel to probe the incident.
