SRINAGAR, Dec 11: Three policemen were injured as militants attacked a Police Station in Anantnag district of South Kashmir tonight while Army recovered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Shopian district.
The attacks came ahead of vote scheduled for December 14 in the twin districts of South Kashmir. Sources said that at around 9:15 p. m., militants threw a grenade towards Police Station Sheirbagh.
The grenade exploded inside the premises of the Police Station resulting in injuries to three cops. The injured policemen were identified as constable Zahoor Ahmad, Mohammad Ashraf and Farooq Ahmad. They were rushed to district hospital Anantnag for treatment.
The blast led to panic among the local residents and senior police and para-military officials visited the spot. The area was cordoned off and searches are being conducted.
Army today said that the troops averted major tragedy by recovering an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in South Kashmir’s Shopian district.
A defence spokesman said here: “Based on the intelligence inputs received from unit source about a presence of IED on Shopian- Bahibug road,  the troops of the Army Unit, carried out a search operation of the areas  resulting into the recovery of one cylinder based IED, planted under the culvert near village Lundura, today, approximately at 1540 hours.”
“The area was immediately cordoned on either side of the road and IED was destroyed by the combined Bomb Disposal Teams of JKP and Army.   A major tragedy was thus averted”, the spokesman said.
South Kashmir’s Shopian and Anantnag districts are voting in the fourth phase on five phase polling in the State on December 14 and security agencies say militant attacks are aimed at disrupting the poll process.
