SRINAGAR : Western Disturbance (WD) eludes Kashmir valley, resulting in chill during the day while Leh and heights in Jammu region experienced snowfall early this morning.
A Met department spokesman said sky would remain cloudy in the valley today, when polling is going on in 16 assembly segments, spread over Srinagar, Anantnag and Shopian districts.
The WD, originating in Arabia sea and entering the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan was very weak, with the result it did not touch the valley.
However, Leh received 5 cms of snow with the result the minimum temperature witnessed considerable increase because of cloudy sky. But the maximum temperature dropped, he said. He said against yesterday’s minimum temperature of minus 9.4 degree, it was minus 4.7 degree. The coldest so far was recorded on December 11 when the mercury dropped to minus 14.4 degree.
Kargil, a border town on Srinagar-Leh national highway, closed for traffic till further orders early this week, also recorded improvement in the night temperature. He said the minimum temperature was minus 7.2 degree against yesterdays minus 10.2 degree. People expecting rain or snow as predicted by the weathermen, woke up to yet another dry and cold morning in the valley, where famed ski resort of Gulmarg with minus 4 was coldest.
In Srinagar, where polling in eight assembly segments was in progress, recorded minus 1.2 degree minimum temperature, about a notch above normal. However, it was about two degree colder than yesterday when it was 0.5 degree.
Qazigund and Kokernag witnessed above normal minimum temperature while at Kupwara it was minus 2.4 degree, half a notch below normal.
Gulmarg, a world famous ski resort in north Kashmir still awaits first major snowfall.
Met spokesman said the minimum temperature was minus 4 degree, though a notch above normal but it was a degree colder than yesterday. There was however, considerable improvement in the minimum temperature at Pahalgam. Against yesterday’s minus 3 degree, it was minus 0.8 degree, three notches above normal.
