SHOPIAN, Dec 14: While voters in Shopian town were swarming to polling stations to cast their votes, the family of two women who were allegedly raped and murdered in 2009, held a protest in the town against the election, presenting a stark reality of Kashmir politics.
Carrying banners and placards which demanded justice for Asiya and Neelofar, their family held a sit-in outside Jamia Masjid in the main town in Shopian for half an hour after which police swooned at the spot and directed them to leave the place.
Sitting among the protesters was dead Neelofar’s son, Souzain, who carried a placard, asking “Where is my mommy?”
Shakeel Ahmad Ahanager, husband of Neelofar and brother of Asiya, said though people are and have been voting in the State yet justice has eluded all the victims of human rights violations.
“We are seeking justice for our women from the last six years. Voting and snatching women’s chastity won’t go together,” he told reporters at the sit-in protest spot.
The family had planned to protest for an hour, but police in large numbers came to the spot and asked them to leave.
