India, Pakistan to hold maritime dialogue tomorrow

NEW DELHI: India and Pakistan will hold their annual maritime dialogue here tomorrow.

A high-level delegation lead by Chief of Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) Rear Admiral Ather Mukthar arrived here today to participate in the dialogue.

Both countries had established the mechanism of annual maritime dialogue by signing an MoU, under which issues relating to safety and security of fishermen and exchange of information on maritime Search and rescue operations are discussed in a structured format.

Vice Admiral Anurag G Thapliyal, Director General Indian Coast Guard, will be heading the Indian side in the dialogue that will be held at Coast Guard Headquarters, New Delhi. Other senior officials from India and Pakistan High Commission will be part of the dialogue.

Last year’s meeting was hosted by Pakistan in Karachi on June 24, 2013.

The annual meeting is a significant link between the two maritime agencies, for exchange of information on maritime boundary violations by fishermen and discussions on coordination issues on maritime search and rescue and marine environment pollution.

The two service heads from Indian Coast Guard and Pakistan MSA also have a hotline link between them for regular exchange of information on non-military maritime issues, as per the MoU between the two Governments. (AGENCIES)
