Udhampuri’s Sufi poetry inspires

Sajda, a book in Punjabi by Dr Jatindra Udhampuri, is collection of 74 songs, poems mostly related to Sufi philosophy, which the author states was, in fact, “a spiritual journey” for him. It is his second in the series, as his first book of Sufiana poetry titled ” Dil Darvesh” was published during 2004 and was also reviewed in the Daily Excelsior and subsequently well received in the literary circles. The foundation of this poetry is pure love for the God and compassion for all.

This 74-page book of Sufi poetry in Punjabi was released by the J&K Governor, N N Vohra at Raj Bhawan, Jammu on November 29 in the presence of galaxy of eminent literary figures. He appreciated this venture of Dr Udhampuri that has taken up the rich tradition of Sufi saints like Bulle Shah, Baba Farid and others. While the Sufi tradition has flourished in Punjab, on both sides of Wagh border between India and Pakistan. Sufism  is also well established in Kashmir valley.
Sway of Sufism
The great Sufi saints had sway in Kashmir and struck deep roots of Suffism in Kashmir during the — century. The message of Suffism added to the spirit of brotherhood, tranquility , harmony and tolerance. There are a number of Sufi saints shrines across the Valley which are invariably held in esteem by all sections of the people.
Dr Udhampuri,  in an interview told me that he has reverence for Sufi saints like Baba Farid’s philosophy and penned down his poetry in Punjabi and Dogri lyrics which have made a mark.
His songs and Kafis are lively and inspiring. During the deep meditation, the soul becomes part of the eternal force and one attains solace of mind, Dr Udhampuri argues and adds that it gives birth to a spiritual thrill and the individual  transcends time and space.
The depth of the Sufi thought has aptly been penned in the stanza which follows:
Key Dassa Es Raaste Loko
Marr Ke Miti Hona Penda
Aapne Hi Mondhe Apna Murda
Aap Hi Haathe Dhona Penda
( What has one to say about the ways of world, where one has to reduce oneself to zero and carry one’s corpse on one’s own shoulders ! )
Praise-worthy Effort
In the foreword of the book, eminent Urdu poet Arsh Sehbai, has expressed a good word about the Sufi cult and great tradition of Sufi saints and their philosophy as also praised the contribution of Dr Udhampuri through his two books in this part of the country.
Padam Shri Dr Udhampuri, in his introductory remarks emphasizes that Sufi sainst have exercised great influence on his mind and in writing this book titled ” Sajda” he felt like undertaking a “spiritual journey” and dedicated the book to peace and universal harmony. He is proud of this contribution!
Deep Roots
Sufism had roots in Afghanistan, Persia, Iran and Indian sub-continent.
It is a significant feature that Sufiana music and poetry has the power to uplift and unify the hearts in any part of the world. It has potential to break the barriers based on geography and political considerations. A key to Indo-Pak relationship is use of  Sufi music and philosophy to give a healing touch for improved people to people ties.
Dr Udhampuri is a leading literary figure who has authored a number of books in Dogri, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi and has over 30 years of service in broadcasting and retired as Senior Station Director, AIR. He is recipient of coveted Sahitya Akademi Award in Dogri during 1981, has bagged many other honours and  received the “Padma Shri” during 2010.
Ponder over just another thoughtful stanza which follows:
Eh gind-jan amanat teri
De ke karz aada kita
Sahah ne mere aunda-jande
Dar tere te Sajda kita
(Life is given and sustained by the Almighty which if devoted to Him makes one absolbed of heavenly debt)
The book “Sajda” is a finely printed on quality paper in hard-bound cover with an attractive title having a picture of Baba Farid. This is one of the premier work done by a noted Jammu-based noted writer, Dr Jatindra  Udhampuri. It is a welcome addition to literature and is expected to  enrich the cultural heritage in this part of the country. I expect that the Punjabi knowing public will be benefitted by it and would at the same time also urge Dr Udhampuri to come out with many more such publications in the period ahead.
