SRINAGAR : Famous Sunday Market on three-km in the heart of city the summer capital, Srinagar, resumed this morning after remaining suspended for two weeks. The market could not be held on December 7 as the entire area was sealed by security forces and state police to foil any attempt to cause any disturbances on the eve of Prime Minister Narendera Modi’s election rally at S K cricket stadium in high security Sonawar area on December 8. However, on December 14, due to polling in 18 assembly constituencies, including eight segments in Srinagar district, the market was not held.
Despite icy cold winds and cloudy sky, hundreds of vendors put up their stalls on both sides of the road from Radio Kashmir Srinagar crossing to Hari Singh High Street (HSHS), including the historic Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the city. The market, selling from a simple needle to carpets attracts customers from different parts of the valley since early morning. After the devastating flood, a large number of big business houses have also put up their stalls in the market through their salesmen and agents.
According to an estimate, business worth several crores is done every Sunday in the market.
Because of heavy rush of customers, adequate security arrangements are also made in the area. (AGENCIES)
