Sir,
“Acid attack on women” by Shiban Khaibari (DE Dec 29, 2014) was highly eye opening and formed a pathetic, nerve rendering and thought provoking reading. The author has aptly condemned the acid attack especially on women; he has rightly compared it to a crime no less than murder. In murder one dies only once, but a victim of acid attack dies every minute throughout his/her life. He has rightly demanded the death sentence for the acid attacker
But in my view, only legislation is no remedy .we have laws for attempt to murder, cold murder, culpable homicide etc, but does that really reduce these crimes. Ever increasing incidents of rape and murder and for that matter acid attack are increasing day in and day out, shows that only law is of no help. The very cruel nature of these crimes reveals that there is something wrong with the psyche of the person involved in such crimes.
The incident cited by the author in the present context ,that the victim cried for help for full 20 minutes ,but not a single soul’ s conscience pricked him to come for help. The incident itself shows how much importance our society in general has for moral values , how much humanity is left in us
The remedy lies in inculcating moral values in our children right at the childhood level. Although it is a long range programme yet it is more effective than any other measure.
I remember our headmaster (reverend Shri Anant Ram Sharma) used to give sermons to us through Ved Mantras, Shlokas of The holy Gita, the moral stories from PanchTantra and Dohas of many saints. It has delved deep inside us till date. Half an hour period was fixed for this type of moral building. As a result the students of our times were always prepared to provide help in such cases, we cannot think of causing even the slightest injury to any one up to this time. We observe that these days moral education has either become extinct or is restricted to books only. If we want to rejuvenate our past glory ,we must teach moral values to our children so that such incidents are not repeated when they grow up. Ahimsa parmodharma should be our motto. Legislation can give some temporary relief, but the thought of not harming others should come from within.
Yours etc……
