KARGIL, Jan 2:
Majority villages in this border district at Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, are facing major power crisis for the past about two months, because of no diesel for Diesel Generator Sets (DGS).
Life remained paralysed due to severe cold as the mercury remained below minus 15 degree Celsius coupled with power failure for the past about two months of majority villages in the district.
People at several villages protested against the authorities for failing to provide diesel to DGS, which is providing electricity to majority villages in the district.
We are under the darkness as DGS are not working, the villagers alleged.
They said there is no diesel for DGS, and district authorities are watching the situation as if they are helpless. However, officials said funds for purchase of diesel were being provided by the State Government. But this time no funds have been released under this head, they said adding with the result there is no diesel for these generator sets.
The villagers expressed concern that diesel has been not stocked for winter when roads to majority villages get closed due to snowfall.
Majority villages remained cut off with the district headquarter during winter due to heavy snowfall. However, this time there was no major snowfall and the roads are still open, they said.
If the funds are not released immediately, diesel could not be stocked for winter months and villagers have to remain without electricity for six months. (UNI)
