IEX sees 2.2 bn units of electricity sale last month

NEW DELHI, Jan 7:  Reflecting sluggish demand, the volume of electricity traded on the Indian Energy Exchange stood at just 2.2 billion units in December, lower than over 3.5 billion units available for sale.
The traded volume in December was however higher than 2.1 billion units (BUs) recorded in November 2014.
The average market clearing price of power rose last month to Rs 3.21 per unit, compared to Rs 3 seen in November.
“The total quantum traded in December was 2.2 BUs reflecting an increase of about three per cent over 2.1 BUs traded in the previous month,” IEX said in a statement today.
The bourse received purchase bids worth 3.18 BUs and sale bids to the tune of 3.52 BUs in December.
“Although in terms of bids received, the intent to purchase was there however due to price sensitivity the intent did not culminate into trade,” the statement said.
As much as 145 MUs of electricity could not be traded due to congestion in the inter-state transmission network in December. It is less than 179 MUs recorded in November.
“Western and Eastern States saw demand reduction by 29 per cent and 51 per cent, respectively (in December)…,” IEX said.
While the North region saw purchase of 35 per cent more electricity, North-East bought 50 per cent more power. In South, the volume of electricity was 54 per cent higher compared to November.
Last month, about 882 participants traded in the day ahead of spot market at the exchange. (PTI)
