JAMMU, Jan 10: Van Sampda has demanded remedial measures to restore the past glory of the river Tawi and develop its embankments into a tourist and recreational spot.
Addressing a press conference, Vijay Sethi, vice president of Van Sampda said that Tawi river has become a nallah as untreated sewage from the city is flowing into the river along with other human interference, he added.
He stated that the remains of the pathway created along side of the river bank and a damaged pillar containing the name plate of Maharaja Hari Singh Park laid by Ghulam Nabi Azad in presence of Dr Karan Singh are the only significant remains for an area developed so far, along with a bund, which has also been damaged during the recent floods.
“We propose that since river Tawi flows dividing the Jammu city in two parts, there is a need to develop the river fronts on either side of the river from 1st bridge (Gujjar Nagar) to 4th bridge (Bhagwati Nagar)”, Sethi added.
He stated that around five years back, few persons with a zeal in their hearts, sensed concerns about the deteriorating situation in environmental issues, and came together for a cause having global ramifications as well to work in unison and with a missionary zeal and hence constituted an environmental NGO Van Sampda. The NGO members wanted to work in a collaborative manner in order to put efforts to save ecosystem and biosphere, he informed.
Among others present were Charanjeet Singh, financial secretary of Van Sampda and DK Sharma, secretary.
