After extremism, drug addiction is serious challenge: IGP

SRINAGAR, Jan 10: After extremism, drug addiction is posing a serious challenge to our society and if this menace is not checked now it is going to assume problem with larger magnitude.
This was stated by IGP Kashmir, A G Mir at a function held here today for commemorating 5 years of dedicated services of Police Drug De-addiction Services, Srinagar.
The function was organized by J&K Police in collaboration with Directorate of Life Learning at Gandhi Bhawan, University of Kashmir.
IGP said that a continuous counter drugs abuse measures need to be evolved on many fronts, the proliferation of drugs and the De-addiction and rehabilitation of the affected.
The Police Drug De-addiction centre that was created seven years back with the initial aim of providing de-addiction facilities to the affected persons has today grown up into Drug De-addiction Services with services extended to rehabilitation also.
IGP said that the rehabilitation services would not have been possible without the active assistance of Directorate of Life Learning, University of Kashmir. The cooperation needs to be further strengthen to yield a perpetual good results. He while elaborating the feats of police Drug De-addiction services said that the centre was established with the help of experts from AIIMS, psychologists and social workers in Srinagar with initial intake capacity of 5 beds that was extended to 10 in 2010 and further to 19 with the opening of two more centers at Anantnag and Baramulla. He said that the position which has been achieved by PDDS was not possible without the hard work and dedication of SP Manoj Pandita and Dr. Muzaffar, Director PDDS.
Professor Mohammad Ashraf Wani, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Kashmir who presided over the function said that collaborative work of University of Kashmir and J&K police should be extended to meaningful research that can help diagnosis of the epidemics of drug menace and other social problems so that effective response can be devised. He said that both curative part and the preventive part of the drug problem needs to be taken care off.
Professor Zaffar Ahmad Reshi Registrar University of Kashmir said that drug addiction is posing a serious challenge to harvest the demographic dividends of our youth. He said that J&K Police and University of Kashmir are doing an excellent job in the curative facet of rehabilitation of the addicts that it has scope of improvement if a structured sharing of research and ideas are put in place.
SP Drug De-addiction Manoj Pandita in his welcome address said that the sapling that was planted in the form of Drug de-addiction centre seven years back has grown up into a tree that is bearing fruits to the society for which it was conceived.
Director Drug De-addiction services Dr. Muzaffar Khan presented the vote of thanks and hoped that with the help of all stake holders we will be able to tackle the menace in a better way.
On this commemoration function the Souvenir of the Police Drug Dr-addiction services “Hayaat -The Life” was released and certificates of the successful recovered drug addict trainees of the Electrician Course conducted by DLL were presented by the Dean Academic Affairs to the Director PDDS.
