UNITED NATIONS, Jan 21: The head of the United Nations mission fighting Ebola in West Africa says despite recent progress close to 1,000 new cases have been recorded in the last three weeks and “the fight is far from won.”
Ismael Ould Cheikh Ahmed told the General Assembly yesterday that “Ebola continues to be a global threat,” and some cases go unreported, especially in rural Guinea where many communities are preventing access by health workers.
But he said the projection three months ago of up to 10,000 new cases per week by December never materialized because of the global medical, logistical and financial response including almost USD 2.5 billion in humanitarian aid.
“The epidemic has turned, and we are now beginning to see an overall decline in the number of new cases,” Ahmed said. (AGENCIES)
