DVM seeks early completion of Ravi Kandi Canal Project

JAMMU, Jan 21: A three-member delegation of Duggar Vikas Manch (DVM) led by its president, Dineshwar S Jamwal, today submitted a memorandum to Governor NN Vohra, Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State in PMO and Jugal Kishore Sharma, Member Parliament through Dr Pawan Kotwal, Commissioner Secretary, PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control seeking early completion of Ravi Kandi Canal Project.
The memorandum says Ravi Kandi-Canal Project by which Ravi river water was allocated to J&K in January 1955 in accordance with the decision taken in the “Inter State Conference on the development and utilization of waters of the Rivers Ravi and Beas” under the ages of Government of India have not reached the parched Kandi areas of Kathua, Samba and Jammu districts. The project should be expedited as it will benefit over 1.3 lakh families and enhance agriculture output of J&K as also lead to the employment generation of the people of these areas.
The delegation requested Governor NN Vohra, Dr Jitendra Singh and Jugal Kishore Sharma to take necessary steps and accord their due consideration to get this issue settled expeditiously as the work on this prestigious project is lingering even after the passage of 35 years.
The memorandum says that had this project got completed in due course of time (as the project was signed on January 20, 1979), the economic condition of the people of these areas could have improved many a time.
Dr Pawan Kotwal assured the deputation that the Government will leave no stone unturned to get its due share from the neighbouring State. He also assured that he will also discuss the matter with the higher authorities of the Government for speedy completion of this project.
The other members of the delegation were Sham Lal Basson, general secretary and Parshotam Thappa, finance secretary, DVM.
