SRINAGAR : Despite fresh snowfall, the national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, remained through for one-way traffic from Jammu to Srinagar today.
Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers and trucks loaded with essentials, left Jammu this morning for Srinagar, official sources said.
They said about six inches of fresh snowfall was experienced on both sides of the Jawahar tunnel, Shaitan Nallah and Banihal area overnight. However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) immediately pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to clear the snow on the highway.
It was snowing at the tunnel area even this morning, they said,
adding that the snow has been cleared and traffic resumed. Vehicles, including those carrying passengers and hundreds of trucks loaded with essentials, left different parts of Jammu region for Kashmir valley this morning. Vehicles, which were stranded at Batote and Udhampur, also left for the valley. However, no vehicle was allowed from Kashmir to Jammu, they said, adding that only one-way traffic will continue on the highway till further orders.
Meanwhile, the national highway connecting the Ladakh region with the Kashmir valley remained closed due to snowfall and slippery road conditions since December last year. The Mughal road connecting south Kashmir with Jammu region also remained closed due to slippery road conditions and snowfall at several places.
